We understand that skin aging is an inevitable process for human beings. But as we well know, many want to delay this stage of life, and Aesthetic Pharmacy offers many ways to prolong youthfulness in a person's skin.
The group made up of doctors Alan Vinícius Oliveira Ferreira Martins, Bárbara Luísa Souza da Silva, Gabriela Melo da Silva and Lorraine Oliveira Amaral addressed one of them in their final course project (TCC), in 2019.
The “Study on the effects of radiofrequency in delaying skin aging” earned the doctors the title of Specialist in Aesthetic Pharmacy. And in this Academic Highlight you will learn a little about radiofrequency and how it contributes to rejuvenation.
Skin aging in Aesthetic Pharmacy
“This process is associated with a reduction in functional capacity that increases susceptibility to skin problems and the subsequent development of wrinkles and sagging”, they explain.
Drawing on the work of Borges (2006), wrinkles form progressively due to a depression of the dermoepidermal junction, which, over the years, ends up losing its anchoring and adhesion to the elastic fibers of the superficial dermis, causing under-tension in the network of collagen fibers.
“The changes caused by chronological aging show up as thinner, more fragile, drier skin, with fine, inelastic wrinkles.”
The composition of the skin is based on two main layers: the epidermis, which is the superficial layer made up of joined epithelial cells; and the dermis, the deeper layer made of dense irregular connective tissue.
Radiofrequency against skin aging
The radiofrequency procedure acts directly in correcting the signs of aging, “from an electromagnetic field that induces the movement of ionized particles, promoting tissue heating by diathermy. This resource has been frequently used in clinical practice for the treatment of wrinkles and sagging, cellulite and localized fat (SADICK, 2016)”, they report in the paper.
This is because the energy generated through radiofrequency penetrates at the cellular level in the layers of the skin, reaching the muscle cells. In this way, as it passes through the tissues, friction or resistance in the tissues is generated, producing a thermal rise in temperature.
And how does this work? “When the body detects a temperature higher than physiological, vasodilation increases with opening of the capillaries, which improves tissue trophism, the reabsorption of excess intercellular fluids and increased circulation (CARVALHO; SILVA, 2011)”, they explain technically.
In this context, the group featured in this article concludes that radiofrequency is effective in treating wrinkles and facial sagging. “Through radiation and by obtaining heat in conversion, the therapeutic modality reaches the layers deeply, causing vasodilation of the tissue and resulting in improvement of facial appearance”, they conclude.
