Lilia Coutinho is from Redenção, in Pará. She earned her degree in Biomedicine at Fesar (Faculty of Higher Education of Reunited Amazonia). But she made one of the most important decisions of her life when she decided to go to Goiânia, Goiás. And she became an aesthetic biomedical professional.
“My interest in aesthetics came from a talk we had at an event organized by the college. I realized I would have more flexibility in my time for my family and other important things in my life”.
As soon as she finished her degree, she entered the specialization. And you can learn the details of the whole story in the next lines. “I started college married and with a daughter, which makes everything even more challenging”. Read on!
Choosing aesthetics as a specialization
While still in college, she did a few internships in laboratories. “But I noticed it wasn't what I was looking for. Besides, the pay was very low for a recent graduate. So I looked for a specialization”.
Today she knows she has a lot to learn and study. Still, she feels satisfied and valued in what she does. “Working with something that raises people's self-esteem is much more than a matter of the body's aesthetics. It's also the aesthetics of the soul. It's altruism”.
In other articles, we have already seen that the clinical routine in hospitals and UBS (Brazil's primary care health units) is quite stressful. On-call shifts and excessive work force health professionals to give up… family, time, and quality of life.
Lilia didn't want that for her life. And she noticed it right at the very beginning of her career. “Today I reap the rewards of that choice. I'm happy with my income and the best part is that I set my own hours”.
The postgraduate course in Aesthetic Biomedicine
In the postgraduate program, Lilia met Dr. Ana Carolina Puga, who is a pioneer in Aesthetic Biomedicine. “I also got to be a student of Dr. Fernanda Viaro, Dr. Jonas Maragom, and Dr. Mônica Dalmasio. I will always admire these four professors”.
But since she came from Pará, she was afraid of facing the challenges of joining the first class of a specialization course like this one. “My expectation was to do a postgraduate program where we could learn how to be better professionals. The final result was incredible”.
“I learned that this field depends a lot on each student. In the postgraduate program, we learn all the theory and the foundation. But afterward we must pursue specialties based on our skills, tastes, and goals”.
“Each professional identifies with something. We each have our own identifications. Today, I work with facial, body, and hair aesthetics and ozone therapy. But what I love doing is PEIM (microvessels), botox, microneedling and intradermotherapy”.
A day-to-day look at working in aesthetics
The aesthetic biomedical professional says she now has her own aesthetics office. It is attached to her house. But what she sees as most advantageous is the work schedule, which is completely flexible. “I usually start seeing patients in the afternoon”.
And she explains that when necessary, she can adjust her work routine. “I also see patients in the morning sometimes. Or in the evening, for those who can't come at other times”.
The ability to reschedule doesn't mean she works more. “I never work long stretches. I charge the amount I think does justice to my work. That is, I don't get tired day to day and I also value what I do”.
In practice, want to know what this means? She gives an example. “If I see 3 people a day and reach my goal by the end of the month, that's fine. I don't turn patients away. But I organize myself very well to have a light schedule and not an overloaded one”.
What will the future hold for the aesthetic biomedical professional
Today she works in her own office. However, she has a plan: to set up her own clinic. “My way”. At the same time, she also wants to invest more and more in a career focused on aesthetics, such as harmonization.
“My projections for the future are: growth of my clinic, new refresher courses, and even a doctorate”.
And for those thinking about investing in this career, she says:
“I recommend this area of aesthetics to other health professionals. However, not only for those thinking about financial return. But, above all, about the responsibility of each procedure, love for people, and ethics, as in any other field”.
The aesthetic biomedical professional recalls that since she started the postgraduate course she could see the cost-benefit of this kind of specialization. “I started doing facial cleansing treatments and that already helped me with the postgraduate installments. I did the other procedures after getting authorization from the Council”.
