“Eleven years ago, on this day, October 8, 2010, I was getting ready to take the trip that would change my life and the lives of HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of biomedical professionals and health professionals.”
Recalling the moment Aesthetic Biomedicinebegan, Dr. Ana Carolina Puga shares the details of when she appeared before the Plenary of the Biomedicine Council to argue for including the aesthetics qualification.
It was on 10/10/2010 that Dr. Ana Carolina Puga fought tooth and nail for her position before the Plenary at the XII Brazilian Congress of Biomedicine, held that year in Recife-PE.
Divided Opinions on Aesthetic Biomedicine
Facing a range of opinions, Dr. Puga says that many professionals believed aesthetics would tarnish the biomedical professional's image in the scientific community. Even so, she was ready to answer any attempt to shake her: “I grew up hearing: one day is the hunted's, and the other is the hunter's. And that was the hunter's day, it was my day, and it was yours too, because I was right there in the hunt, fighting for our rights, for our professional freedom and for the biomedical professional's real role in Aesthetic Health”, she says.
Dr. Ana Carolina Puga's presentation that day is what secured biomedical professionals' freedom to work as independent practitioners. It is thanks to that fateful day, eleven years ago, that thousands of professionals today have the right to open their own clinics, set their own hours and earn the long-awaited recognition, working as health professionals and earning very well for it.
With a 20-minute time limit and a certain initial lack of interest from the audience, Dr. Ana began her argument: “I got going and started talking about what Aesthetic Biomedicinewould be, I explained that the knowledge biomedical professionals already had would be applied in this field, the difference between aesthetics and Aesthetic Health, and how much this new qualification would make our biomedicine grow”.
The Beginning of the Aesthetic Biomedical Professional Class
Almost as if foreseeing the profession's future, that was the starting point for biomedical professionals to be better known, respected and valued today. But the professional who had always shown a passion for biomedicine did not know how much the new field would help countless biomedical professionals financially, how it would lead many who had already given up on their profession to love biomedicine again and find themselves in it, and how many other professionals would study biomedicine to work exclusively in Aesthetic Biomedicine.
After presenting the full rationale for the procedures currently regulated, the initial 20 minutes turned into 2.5 hours, and after the presentation, Dr. Puga left the plenary along with the others present. Once the vote among the CFBM (Federal Council of Biomedicine) board was finished, those present were called in to hear the verdict: “It was the most hoped-for vote result in the previous 4 years, and at that moment, Dr. Silvio Cecchi stood next to me and said that by near unanimity, with only 1 vote against, the qualification in Aesthetic Biomedicine had been approved”, she says.
That moment is what shaped the future of biomedicine as we know it today, and what allowed Aesthetic Biomedicine to become one of the fastest-growing fields in Brazil. That is why 10/10 is legendary for all of us at Nepuga/FAPUGA and for the whole class of aesthetic professionals who are fulfilled today working in Aesthetic Health.
