Aesthetic Nursing – Dr. Vanessa Ramos presents her final paper on carboxytherapy
The topic chosen for the thesis of Vanessa Kelveny, a graduate of the postgraduate program in aesthetic nursing, was the study of carbon dioxide therapy (carboxytherapy) in the treatment of gynoid lipodystrophy (cellulite), a procedure on the rise in the aesthetics market that has been applied in a variety of cases.

Dr. Vanessa Kelveny da Silva Ramos is a nurse with a degree from Universidade Ceuma and a postgraduate degree in Aesthetic Nursing from Nepuga/FAPUGA São Luís – MA campus. She completed her undergraduate degree in 2012 and found in aesthetics an area to forge new paths in line with her passion for the field.

Finishing her postgraduate program in Aesthetic Nursing in 2019, Dr. Vanessa stood out among the graduates with her final course paper (TCC) on “CARBON DIOXIDE THERAPY (CARBOXYTHERAPY) IN THE TREATMENT OF GYNOID LIPODYSTROPHY.” A literature review conducted from April to June 2019, which aims to investigate the scientific evidence on carbon dioxide therapy in the treatment of gynoid lipodystrophy (GL).

Dr. Vanessa begins by clarifying some myths about the condition “Gynoid lipodystrophy (GL), popularly known as “cellulite,” is a frequent change in skin topography, aesthetically unpleasant, and present almost predominantly in the female population. However, the Latin-derived word “cellulite” is used incorrectly, since it simply means inflammation of the cells, which is not what happens in this condition”.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not only genetic factors that trigger GL: “The onset of these factors may be due to “carriers,” such as: liver and metabolic disorders, mental exhaustion, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate diet, associated with increased capillary pressure and a deficit in lymphatic reabsorption.”

For treatment, Dr. Vanessa highlights the following methodology “Carboxytherapy is a therapeutic alternative for dermatological conditions that improves tissue perfusion and raises the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) as well as local circulation patterns, and is regarded as an effective therapeutic resource with benefits that include improved skin elasticity, arteriopathies, localized fat, cellulite and stretch marks.”

She adds the importance of researching this method “This review is justified because carboxytherapy is still a new therapy in the country, with scarce scientific publications that need further investigative depth.”

After analyzing this Aesthetic Nursing study, Dr. Vanessa reaches extremely relevant results for those who work with the treatment of GL, “Regarding the pharmacological effect of CO2, we can state that the main one is the potentiation of the Bohr effect, due to the tendency of O2 to leave the bloodstream when the CO2 concentration rises, causing an increase in the amount of O2 available to the tissue, resulting in a decrease in the amount of fat tissue.”

Aesthetic Nursing alumna Dr. Vanessa Kelveny currently lives in her hometown, Santa Luzia do Paruá in Maranhão, where she divides her time between her career and the beautiful family she has built. Working in her own office, she is a specialist in aesthetics and family health, and is also qualified for ozone therapy treatments.

“I work in aesthetic nursing out of vocation, I feel honored by my profession and by the path I am following, says Dr. Vanessa.
