The work of the Aesthetic Biologist is relatively new. It was at the end of 2020 that the Federal Council of Biology (CFBio, Brazilian professional council) published Resolution No. 582/2020 which authorizes biologists to work in Aesthetics.
Before that authorization came, the routine of many biologists was as exhausting as that of any other healthcare professional. Dr. Rosana Macedo de Almeida chose to pursue the Postgraduate Program in Aesthetic Biologyprecisely to have another career option that offered the conditions she was looking for, such as flexible hours and professional recognition.
Learn her story in this Success Story.
Aesthetic Biology: opportunity and professional recognition
Dr. Rosana began leaning toward biology when she took a technical course in clinical analysis and realized she liked the health field. She graduated in biological sciences, with a focus on microbiology and immunology, from the University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
The biologist has always worked with hospital-acquired infections, spent a period focused on research, earned her master's degree in that area and is following the same path with her doctorate. Dr. Rosana currently works at a hospital in Rio de Janeiro and says the reality of the profession is very demanding.
“We have an extremely stressful and heavy routine in the labs, and unfortunately the health field, which is so noble, isn't very well valued, and we don't get pay that matches our responsibility”, says the aesthetic biologist.
That was one of the reasons Dr. Rosana looked for another area of practice within biology. In addition, the aesthetic biologist says she has always liked Aesthetics, so that option was the one that caught her attention the most.
Why move into Aesthetic Biology?
Faced with the hectic and exhausting routine Dr. Rosana had, she saw in Aesthetic Biology an opportunity to keep working in healthcare, but this time with something that brought more flexibility and more enjoyment too.
“I wanted something that wasn't as stressful as healthcare, where there's a lot of pressure too, which has a big impact on our mental health and personal well-being”, she says.
In addition, since she has always enjoyed self-care and all the benefits Aesthetics brings people, the decision was even easier to make.
“I've always liked well-being related to image, so it's an area I find very interesting, with really cool techniques. I have friends who work in the field, and that's why I decided to specialize”, says the aesthetic biologist.
Plans for the future as an Aesthetic Biologist
To reach her goals in Aesthetic Biology, such as having more flexible hours, Dr. Rosana plans to start her own business and keep honing her skills.
“I plan to start my own business, and I already see a few friends who ask me a lot. I want to hone my skills in the field, especially since we have a very wide range of practice in aesthetics. I plan to do advanced training in facial and body harmonization, which is a starting point for a series of new dreams”, she emphasizes.
Enjoying caring for people's well-being is one of the priorities of healthcare professionals; after all, this profession has to be practiced with a lot of love, and for the aesthetic biologist it is no different.
“I think it's really great to work with people's self-esteem, to help them feel better about their own image and their own health”, she concludes.
