Dr. Natasha Maiara Aleixo begins the presentation of her Final Course Project (TCC). The graduate, who has held a degree in Biomedicine from Centro Universitário Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio – CEUNSP since 2014, earned her postgraduate degree in Aesthetic Biomedicine at Nepuga/FAPUGA in São Paulo-SP.
In 2018, Dr. Natasha began her postgraduate program in Aesthetic Biomedicine, and during her time at Nepuga/FAPUGA she fell in love with the field of injectables. She discovered that through these techniques she could impact the lives of many patients.
So, after guidance from her professors and a great deal of dedication to research, the topic “BOTULINUM TOXIN IN AESTHETICS AND ITS DIFFERENT THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS” emerged as her final course project to complete her postgraduate program. Bringing together all the knowledge acquired throughout the course, she writes with mastery:
“Botulinum toxin is a substance produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum in seven different types. Of these, type A is considered the most efficient in terms of the lowest dose used per application and the greatest desired effect through a longer duration of muscle relaxation, and consecutive improvement in facial appearance…”
Emphasizing the benefits of applying type A in Aesthetic Biomedicine, Dr. Natasha highlights that “Botulinum Toxin A plays an extremely effective role in patients' lives, in both therapeutic and aesthetic procedures. It is becoming a very viable option for improving self-esteem and quality of life for people looking for a less invasive alternative. Because it has few contraindications and side effects, excellent cost-benefit, easy access and no red tape.”
Therefore, besides how easy and efficient it is to apply, the student highlights its main uses, “The substance has become a great ally for therapeutic treatments such as hyperhidrosis, bruxism, spasticity, among others, and in aesthetics it shows itself as the main alternative for treating facial wrinkles, décolleté, nasal lines, gummy smile, facial asymmetries, eyebrow lifting, among others”.
Although the Botox procedure in Aesthetic Biomedicine is very effective, Dr. Natasha stresses the importance of care in its application “For its use to succeed, one must always seek properly licensed and qualified professionals for such procedures; its application becomes very safe and effective when safety protocols and correct application are followed, achieving positive results and full patient satisfaction.”
However, in some cases the application is not recommended. “The use of botulinum toxin is contraindicated for patients who suffer from neuromuscular diseases, such as: neuromuscular transmission disorders, acquired autoimmune disease, among others. These diseases decrease the release of acetylcholine at the presynaptic site of the neural plate. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients who use aminoglycosides, or who have allergic reactions to BT also cannot use the drug”, the specialist adds.
After graduating in 2019, Dr. Natasha continued working in the field and holds the position of Laboratory Analyst at Unimed in Salto/SP, where she currently lives. She comments on how the postgraduate program in Aesthetic Biomedicine added value to her day-to-day knowledge: “I know that the research on botulinum toxin improved the way I see the use of the substance in the therapeutic field.”
