Aesthetic Biomedicine: Stretch Mark Treatment with Hyaluronic Acid

“The literature on this subject is still scarce, so new studies are needed that can offer more effective treatments and allow a reliable protocol to be established.”

To complete the postgraduate program in Aesthetic Biomedicine, graduates Adriana Chaves, Bruna Caetano, Keila Kugnharski and Rafaela Menin submitted their Final Course Project (TCC) to the Nepuga/FAPUGA examining board.

The group of four biomedical professionals dedicated themselves to the study of “Treatment of striae alba and striae rubra with hyaluronic acid application.” The postgraduate students from the Curitiba-PR unit aimed to carry out a literature review to verify the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid on striae alba and rubra, through intradermotherapy.

Earning the highest grade in the institution's evaluation, the students completed the specialization in 2019 and received the Academic Highlight distinction in the Nepuga library. See more about the conclusions reached by the Aesthetic Biomedical Professionals!

Stretch mark treatment

Since stretch marks are one of the most common skin conditions, the group set out to discuss the epistemology of these lesions, “Stretch marks present as parallel linear atrophic lesions. This change occurs in both men and women. At first they are red, and later they evolve to a pearly stage, when they become whitish. Because it is an aesthetic process, with no pathological significance or change in skin function, it causes low self-esteem in some individuals and becomes a cause of depression.”.

As for the etiology of stretch marks, some factors are seen as the main ones, “The factors that trigger stretch marks are: excessive growth, pregnancy, use of corticosteroid-based medications, sudden weight changes, and genetic predisposition.”

As mentioned, stretch marks tend to cause aesthetic discomfort in women of various ages, which is why the treatment of this condition is widely studied in the field of advanced aesthetics.

Hyaluronic Acid in Stretch Mark Treatment

Even with advances in aesthetics, there are still no studies proving a fully effective treatment for the complete disappearance of stretch marks. However, some published works have shown satisfactory results with different types of therapeutic properties

The group's final project used as its theoretical framework the report of a clinical study on the treatment, “Taking this into consideration, hyaluronic acid will be applied to different regions of the body affected by striae alba or rubra, with monthly evaluation to obtain the treatment results through intradermotherapy.”.

In the field of advanced aesthetics, hyaluronic acid is known as an excellent moisturizer for cosmetic use, so the specialists highlight its potential as a filler in the treatment of stretch marks. “It is a mucopolysaccharide found in intracellular tissues and fluids. It has properties that regulate water in the extracellular fluids, protect against infection, and lubricate, and it has a healing action.”

Concluding the work, the specialists highlight that intradermotherapy with hyaluronic acid has satisfactory results on striae alba and rubra. But they warn that there are variable factors, “There is no minimum or maximum number of sessions, since the number of sessions varies according to how the treatment progresses. The results obtained will depend on some factors, such as the patient's skin color and age.”.
