When we're younger, we often struggle with the dilemma of what our future life will look like. Fears about the uncertainty of work, family, and how life will unfold affect almost every teenager. In Gustavo Jacobina's case, it was different. “Aesthetics is my life project,” says the biomedical professional, who from a very young age was certain he would pursue a career in aesthetics.
Gustavo never doubted what he would do with his career. At a stage when many schoolmates and friends his age agonize over what to do with their lives, he already knew what he wanted for himself. With an affinity for health, the 35-year-old from Rio de Janeiro earned his degree in Biomedicine, where he works in the technology field.
With the chance to enter the specialization, Gustavo is now doing the postgraduate program and is already planning his first steps in this universe full of possibilities. Excited about the hands-on practice and the content, the biomedical professional hopes to fulfill his childhood dream and finally become an Aesthetic Biomedical Professional.
“Aesthetics is my life project.”
From a very young age, Gustavo Jacobina was sure which career he would follow: one in the health field. With great affection for the health sector, Gustavo decided, among all the options available, to earn his degree in Biomedicine. That choice was not random.
Besides knowing he would be involved in health, he also wanted to work in aesthetics. The biomedical professional already saw the aesthetics market as a powerhouse, even though the sector didn't have much consumer demand yet when he started his degree.
A visionary, the young biomedical professional didn't give up and kept pursuing qualification in aesthetics. Working as a biomedical professional, Gustavo Jacobina says he performs work that differs from the traditional path of biomedical professionals. A professional in the technology field, he points out that this is not so common, since his colleagues usually work in clinics and laboratories.
“Among all the options I had within the health field, I chose Biomedicine, but already with aesthetics in mind. Although at the time it wasn't very common, and the market wasn't that open to aesthetics itself, today it is a strong field in Brazil and, thank God, I was able to get into the specialization.”

A dream come true: the specialization in aesthetic biomedicine
When he talks about his specialization, Gustavo lights up, because it's a dream come true. So far he hasn't had the chance to perform procedures, since he's still at the beginning of the classes, but he is hopeful about the content and the clinical immersions.
When we did this interview, Gustavo was in his first clinical immersion. Still getting to know his fellow classmates in the specialization, he talks enthusiastically about this new experience. The biomedical professional doesn't perform procedures yet, so putting into practice all the content he is learning excites him.
“I'm loving it. Everything is really good. I love the content, because when you study something you enjoy, it's very easy. We don't have to wear ourselves out to take in and absorb the content. Since I was already reading a lot about the subject, the readings are more rewarding.”
About this choice, Gustavo says that his affinity for people's well-being counted for a lot when he decided to pursue aesthetic health. Of course, opportunities for autonomy are one of the advantages of choosing one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country, but he is grounded and intends to keep improving his skills so he can provide quality service to his patients.
“I intend to be an entrepreneur. Of course, at first I would like to have a “guide,” someone who can lead me in the best possible way and give me the experience I need. After all, I haven't had contact with patients yet, and later I'd open my own clinic, thinking, of course, about the autonomy this sector offers us.”
Gustavo follows developments in aesthetics in Rio de Janeiro and recognizes it as a market with many opportunities. Either way, always staying grounded, the biomedical professional is first gaining as much information and practice as possible to be prepared for the challenges of his new career.
“I'm looking at the opportunities slowly, but I haven't taken any steps in that direction yet. It's a different world for me. I move slowly, but always forward.”
