The specialist, who earned her Pharmacy degree at Centro Universitário Unieuro and completed a postgraduate program in aesthetic pharmacy at Nepuga/FAPUGA in Brasília-DF, opens the presentation of her Final Course Project (TCC) with the following dedication:
“I dedicate this to my parents, Luciano and Lucineide, and my boyfriend Vinícius, for all the love, patience and encouragement”
In 2018, Dr. Kelly began her Postgraduate Program in Aesthetic Pharmacy, and during her time at Nepuga/FAPUGA she refined her techniques and dedicated herself to developing her TCC on a topic of relevance in the field.
Choosing the topic for the aesthetic pharmacy TCC
After guidance from her professors and a great deal of dedication to research, the topic emerged: “THE ANTIOXIDANT POWER OF COENZYME Q10 AS A WEIGHT-LOSS AID IN AESTHETICS.”
Discussing the topic, which is little explored, Dr. Kelly says: “ Coenzyme Q10 has well-established antioxidant and, consequently, anti-inflammatory effects related to its role in the electron transport chain. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ubiquinone in improving physical performance, observing the possible benefits of oral supplementation in male individuals who do not engage in regular physical activity”.
Dr. Kelly highlights that: “This study aimed to evaluate the capacity to reduce oxidative stress and cardiac muscle damage in order to improve physical performance and, consequently, assist the weight-loss process, through supplementation with coenzyme Q10”.
Through the literature review, it was possible to observe improvements in the volunteers' post-workout recovery.
Despite the few studies dedicated to the topic, the results obtained in this work were significant: “A positive regulation of some enzymes in the mevalonate pathway may occur with stimulation of ubiquinone biosynthesis. This stimulation occurs with oxidative stress, mediated by ubiquinone catabolism. However, more in-depth studies on ubiquinone biosynthesis and catabolism in this context are needed.”
Nevertheless, even with the scarcity of available studies, the specialist Dr. Kelly concludes her TCC.
“Further studies on coenzyme Q10 supplementation will be indispensable to make the results more robust. To corroborate them, it is necessary to increase the sample size, ensure homogeneity between the Q10 experimental group and the placebo group, and carry out studies with other variables such as respiratory rate, heart rate variability and blood pressure”.
