As many already know, the Federal Council of Biology (CFBio, Brazil's federal council for biologists) has authorized biologists since December of last year to work in the field of Aesthetic Biology, and this has changed the course of many professionals' lives.
Dr. Kassiano dos Santos Sousahas a degree in biology, is a PhD candidate at USP, works in research, gives talks and teaches classes, and still he was looking for something more.
So, soon after his profession was qualified to work in Aestheticshe decided to build on his training with a specialization in the field, which brought a life change and a new outlook on his profession.
Read his story in this article.
Aesthetic Biologist, Neuroscientist and Researcher
In January 2021, Dr. Kassiano was already enrolling in the Postgraduate Program in Aesthetic BiologyThe biologist says that, in the middle of the pandemic, he sought to get to know himself better and reinvent himself in some way.
“A lot has changed, and aesthetic biology came to me almost like a calling at a time of many doubts about the future. Amid so many doubts, it appeared as a certainty”he says.
After all, who hasn't dreamed about what they wanted to be when they grew up? Since childhood, Kassiano dreamed of becoming the marine biologist he saw on TV shows.
“So I didn't think twice when it came time to check biology on my first college entrance exam, and it worked out”he says. But while studying, he saw that biology was much bigger than he had imagined.
He discovered other worlds beyond marine biology, such as anatomy, pharmacology and physiology, the field in which he is finishing his doctorate. “I've always liked working in the lab, doing research and teaching. But I always felt something was missing, you know?”he says.
In the middle of his undergraduate studies, Dr. Kassiano says he already liked the health fields a lot, which is why he chose to pursue physiology. But it was the field of Aesthetic Biology that always captivated him.
“Only after the Council of Biology recognized and regulated the aesthetics qualification for biologists did it become a reality for me,” he explains.
Postgraduate Program in Aesthetic Biology: Experience and Plans
Dr. Kassiano started his postgraduate program already in a hybrid formatwith theory classes online and hands-on classes in person.
“The experience has been great for me. With the online theory I can fit it better around my current work schedule, and I keep the material to study and review whenever I need to. That way, we go into the hands-on classes focused, we get much more out of the content and can just practice all day”he comments.
Like most professionals who move into Aesthetic Biology, the researcher says he plans to start a business in the field. “When I finish the postgraduate program, I do plan to open my own practice. I'm already in touch with other professionals in the field and we have several projects in mind. The future is exciting!”he says.
Dr. Kassiano says he plans to specialize more and more in facial and body harmonization, such as applying Botox, fillers and biostimulators.
“But never forgetting the basics: giving someone healthy skin goes far beyond aesthetic value, it is a matter of physical and emotional health.”
He also plans to keep teaching and working as a researcher, because, in his view, acquiring knowledge is just as important as passing it on. “Knowledge that stands still disappears, it evaporates. Knowledge that is passed on overflows!”
The doctor, researcher and now aesthetic biologist also stresses that the aesthetics field is incredible, because it has a lot to add for his profession in Aesthetic Biology.
“Besides having knowledge in physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, cell biology and biochemistry (essential knowledge for anyone who wants to pursue the field), we learn how all of this naturally integrates with the individual and their relationship with the environment. In other words, by developing balance in the body, we attack the cause of the problem directly. That is the natural relationship of things”he concludes.
