Since the end of last year, biologists can explore new professional paths: Aesthetic Biology. The Federal Council of Biology (CFBio) authorized the profession to work in Aesthetic Health and perform various procedures, and this led many to look for a postgraduate program in aesthetics.
Aesthetics is no longer the plan B for biologists; it has all the potential and is increasingly the main goal for a profession that dreams of professional autonomy, just like others in the health field.
Dr. Patrícia Pais Martins, from Rio de Janeiro – RJ, who holds a degree in biology, saw the opportunity to chart her path toward entrepreneurship and is looking to change her life.
Read about her journey in the health field until she arrived at aesthetic biology in today's article.
A long road to Aesthetic Biology
The health field came into Dr. Patrícia's life by chance. At the end of high school, she was lost about what to study and put Laboratory Technician as her first choice on the entrance exam, and she ended up being accepted to study at Faetec (Faculdade de Apoio à Escola Técnica).
From then on she discovered a taste for the field, and when she finished the technical program she chose to enter a biology undergraduate degree to continue studying what she liked.
“At the end of the last year I could choose between the environmental field or health, and again I stayed with what I liked. I didn't go into medicine because I knew I didn't have the calling for some things,” says the biologist.
She started as an intern at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FioCruz), became a researcher, found her place in the field and stayed there for 10 years working as a scholarship researcher, where she earned her master's degree. Soon after, she passed a selection process to work in the army as a laboratory technician. And only later would Aesthetic Biology come.
“I stayed there for nine years working outside my field, in a pharmacy, in the pharmaceutical industry, but always within the health field,” she explains.
After leaving the army, she spent a few years away from work to take care of her son and is currently at FioCruz. But even though she enjoys being a researcher, she says she has always been passionate about the field of aesthetic biology, although it remained in the background.
“So I thought about pursuing a degree that would let me work with aesthetics and I studied biomedicine for a while. But in December of last year, when the resolution came out allowing biologists to work with aesthetics, I put the course on hold and immediately went after my postgraduate program,” the doctor reveals.
At last, a postgraduate student in Aesthetic Biology
It took a good number of years, but she finally managed to begin her journey in Aesthetic Health. But besides liking the profession itself, the doctor highlights the benefits of being able to own her own business in the future.
“What I like about the aesthetics field is that I can work independently, because the health field is very hard for that. As a biologist, how could I be independent? By opening a laboratory?! That's much more complex. And in the aesthetics market, if you're a good professional, pick a good location and, among N factors, you can earn well and make a name for yourself,” she says.
As mentioned, opening her own clinic is part of her plans in aesthetic biology, but she says that before actually having her own space, she will wait until she finishes her postgraduate program, gain experience working in clinics and then move on to entrepreneurship.
“I like everything about this field, but I intend to focus on facial treatments. Not that I won't see other things, but when you generalize, you end up losing focus and making the process harder,” she concludes.
