Biomedical Professional in Aesthetics – “I Stopped Caring for Diseases and Started Caring for People's Well-Being”

In the lines below, you will learn about the change that took place in the career of Juliana Pereira Silva, from Araraquara (SP). By becoming a biomedical professional in aesthetics, she became a professional who cares for her patients' self-esteem and not only for diseases.

To make the text below lighter and easier to follow, we have divided this journey into major, important topics, starting with the biomedical professional's work in night shifts and ending with the specialization in aesthetics. Take a look!

Aesthetics as a Biomedicine Specialization

Juliana begins by telling how the idea of becoming a biomedical professional in aesthetics came about. Aesthetics is one of the options for those who want to specialize in biomedicine, a possibility that came about thanks to the efforts of Dr. Ana Carolina Puga back in 2010.

“During my degree, I learned about some specializations and among them aesthetics”. But she says that at that time she wasn't very interested in the field, until she started working at a hospital and saw that the job wasn't what she really wanted.

“We dealt with illness, with death and things like that every day. The problem is that I had no happiness working like that. Through some friends, I discovered the aesthetics side. And that was the moment I went down that path”.

The Traditional Work of Biomedical Professionals

Aesthetics is not always a biomedical professional's first choice. And that is what happened with Juliana Silva. But the option becomes interesting when these professionals have to deal with traditional work, which is quite tense, dense and intense.

“I started in the lab working night shifts. It was every other night. And also on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays. After some time, I started working in the morning. Still, an intense routine, of urgent care and emergencies”, said the biomedical professional in aesthetics.

She remembers that she always had to be at work at the set time and had to be available to run various types of tests. “We had to run every kind of test that came in. And also the routine ones that were sent to us”.

The Shift from Traditional Work to Aesthetics

Unhappy at her job and with the possibility of working in aesthetics, Juliana made a decision that would change her career: the postgraduate program. “I wasn't satisfied with that job because I felt it wasn't for me”.

However, “in July 2019, after hearing aesthetics recommended by many people, I decided to dig deeper and learn a bit more about the field. At that moment, I chose not to go into aesthetics yet. I spent some time just researching and thinking about it”.

Everything in its own time in the life of this biomedical professional in aesthetics! “Also because I was finishing my MBA in project management. Later, when the pandemic began, I felt the need to find something more to do, and that's when I went after aesthetics”.

What Led Her to Aesthetic Biomedicine

Simply being dissatisfied with an intense job doesn't always make a dream possible. In Juliana's case, besides that motivation, she also began to notice the advantages of the specialization in aesthetics.

“The aesthetics field gives you a certain pleasure because you care for people's well-being. So I stopped caring for diseases and started caring for people's well-being, where they feel good. That was also something that enchanted me about the field”.

And there is the financial side for this biomedical professional in aesthetics too. “We hear very good things about the financial side of aesthetics. First, a very good return and, for me especially, not having to work night shifts”.

The Aesthetic Biomedicine Course

By now, you may be wondering about the postgraduate course in aesthetic biomedicine. Aren't you? So take a look at what Juliana says about her professional experience as a biomedical professional in aesthetics.

“For me, the program was excellent because it had an online theory component, since I wouldn't have been able to come and attend in person. So it was very good. And since we were in the pandemic, nobody could leave home”.

After the theory comes the practice! “And that way I was able to get quite a bit of the online course done ahead of time. The immersion part is also very good because we get to get our hands dirty and actually learn to do everything we saw in class”.

The Days Ahead After the Postgraduate Program

Working without night shifts is possible, and Juliana learned this by considering the idea of being a biomedical professional in aesthetics: “That is, you can make your own schedule, set your own hours and work the days you are available. That was also something I liked”.

Now, the future is much happier than one can imagine. “I plan to finish the program and open a little space of my own, because I'm feeling quite a bit of response from people coming to me for procedures”.

On some days of the clinical immersion, Juliana came into contact with other health professionals, which also allowed for networking. Among them, Marianna de Freitas Cosmo and Luan Brenner.
