“I always like to say this: The younger you go, the younger you get there”. That is what this health professional said, who chose Aesthetic Biomedicine.
Biomedical professional Edvaldo Lopes graduated from Faculdade Santa Maria (FSM) in Cajazeiras, his hometown in the interior of Paraíba. A prodigy from the Paraíba sertão, he explains that, academically, his path was fast-tracked.
“I passed the entrance exam at 15, started college at 16, and graduated at 20”.
Now 23 and living in the interior of São Paulo, Edvaldo shares a bit of his life story.
“I always wanted a field that bridged biology and medicine; I didn't really know the biomedicine program. Since I'm from the Northeast, in the sertão it's a very new program”, he says.
As soon as he discovered the field of biomedicine, he fell in love with the health side of it.
“I entered biomedicine already knowing I liked research, but over the course of the program, a field I had never thought about working in caught my attention, which is aesthetics. I graduated qualified in clinical analysis, but deep down there was always that little twinge reminding me of aesthetics”.
First Contact with Aesthetic Biomedicine
His first contact with Aesthetic Biomedicine came through one of his professors in college.
“One of my professors, who is a dermatofunctional specialist, always said that if she could go back in time she would study biomedicine in order to specialize in aesthetics. She always highlighted the autonomy of the profession”.
The specialization, which had not been part of his repertoire before, began to spark Edvaldo's interest.
While researching the subject, the biomedical professional came across Dr. Ana Carolina Puga, MSc in 2016, during a congress held at FIP (Faculdades Integradas de Patos), whose live broadcast he followed.
“I'm a person who doesn't like to get into something I don't know; I always research first. Aesthetics caught my attention because of the professional autonomy, something the Clinical Analysis field doesn't allow, so I started pursuing it”, Edvaldo says about how he got started in the field.
The difficulty of entering a market that was scarce in his region motivated him to look for new opportunities in the state of São Paulo. That is how, though still very young, he left his hometown with few belongings to bet everything on his studies and on biomedicine.
“I had to move to the state of São Paulo, and I started to see that here people already have a broader knowledge of the field, and that began to wake something in me, and I decided to start developing one step at a time”.
Dr. Ana Carolina Puga Is a Benchmark in the Aesthetic Biomedicine Postgraduate Program
Through a message on the Instagram of Dr. Ana Carolina Puga, MSc, the postgraduate student reached out to explain a bit of his story and his desire to specialize.
That was when the doctor and her team replied to the message and did everything they could to help him fulfill his dream. Moved by Edvaldo's story and determination, Nepuga granted him a scholarship for the Aesthetic Biomedicine Postgraduate Program.
Thus, the biomedical professional has been taking his postgraduate program since 2020, and he tells how this process has been.
“I intend to enter the entire aesthetic field, because the profession itself already offers a range of opportunities for that. I watch many videos of Dr. Ana explaining facial harmonization, carboxytherapy, and I didn't understand how those areas existed, so I studied a lot, analyzed a lot, because they are extremely different fields but with a single purpose, which is the patient's aesthetics”.
While specializing in Aesthetic Biomedicine, Edvaldo still keeps his job at a Clinical Analysis laboratory. But he stresses that he has big plans for his near future.
“Working in aesthetics is a dream of mine, but teaching has always been present for me, to teach what I know and learn what I don't; I want to be able to combine both areas”, says the postgraduate student.
