Aesthetic Nursing Training and the Rediscovery of One’s Own Professional Potential

Taisy Silva says she decided to pursue nursing training because she noticed that a very important person to her greatly admired women who work in healthcare: her mother. Recognizing this, she understood that what her own mother admired would be good for her, and many women she herself admires work in the field.

Thus, her nursing training began at the technical level back in 2008, and she also completed her undergraduate degree in 2012.

Taisy worked as a technician in a private hospital, in a blood bank, a DNA clinic, public hospitals and internship supervision, thus accumulating a great deal of clinical and hospital experience.

She says that, even while working in the hospital setting, she always had an entrepreneurial, sales-oriented spirit. Because of this trait, she was always selling something on her own alongside her main job.

And, building on that knack, she decided to open a clothing store in a shopping arcade, the same arcade where a friend had an aesthetics space.

The store ended up not doing very well, but another opportunity opened up for Taisy when her friend at the aesthetics space needed help and invited her to work with her.

The nurse then took a few courses focused on the aesthetic procedure for microvessels (PEIM) and on facial harmonization. That was when her perception of her abilities began to shift, along with career possibilities she doubted, and which she continues to dismantle. She explains it better:

“Some limiting beliefs made me believe that aesthetics is not for Black women… That I wasn’t the aesthetic standard to work in aesthetics”.

It is constant work to reaffirm herself and seek inspiration in other women.

But today she has access to several of these sources of inspiration within the Postgraduate Program. In particular, Taisy mentions one of the faculty members she is in contact with, as well as Dr. Ana Carolina Puga, whom she mentions when talking about the search for inspiration.

Aesthetic Nursing Training

Even after taking a few courses dedicated to aesthetics, Taisy did not feel fully prepared for everything she could still accomplish, so going deeper through the most complete course, the specialization in aesthetic nursing, was the natural path to follow. And she speaks with great passion about her experience in the postgraduate program:

“When I had my first hands-on class it was enchanting, I identified with it so much, I was certain this was what I wanted. Today, aesthetics is my reason, it’s a rediscovery.”

A rediscovery of what? You may wonder, and that is exactly what I asked Taisy next, getting a touching answer: a rediscovery of herself as a person.

She explained to me that her life had come to a standstill, lacking challenges, and going after more and more of her potential through her training was the path she chose to live more intensely. And now she is finding challenges that inspire her. Becoming a reference in aesthetics is the biggest one.

Starting a business has also been a challenge, which she is tackling little by little: first, she bought a treatment table and other equipment from the sale of items she had in the clothing store, but it is still important to finish the postgraduate program and seek certification, at which point Taisy will be able to be the RT (technical manager) of her own clinic.

We know that hospital work demands a lot of healthcare professionals’ time and energy and, today, balancing specialization with work at a hospital, Taisy says she likes hospital routines a lot but doesn’t see herself working the same way in the future.

In the process of going deeper through aesthetic nursing training, she has learned a great deal, gaining more confidence with each practice session and exchange with classmates and faculty. A horizon of opportunities opens up from these experiences.

As Taisy rightly points out, having professional role models to draw inspiration from shows the possible paths. That is our aim with this glimpse of her career: to inspire other healthcare professionals as well, while wishing the protagonist of this story ever more opportunities and as much success as her own role models achieved.
