From Pain to Beauty: The Turning Point for Those Working in Orofacial Harmonization

Like so many other health professionals, many dentists say that dealing with their patients' pain and illness in the office can sometimes become a discouraging, draining routine. But when you work with orofacial harmonization, the story is different.

“When I do endodontic treatments, it's a lot of patients in pain. So today I'm in the middle of this turning point and I'm working with my patients' beauty”, says Fernanda Reis with a smile on her face, because she is transforming her career.

The career and demand for aesthetic procedures

A dentistry graduate of 4 years, Fernanda has always loved aesthetics, but first specialized in endodontics and has worked, since graduating, at the same clinic where she used to be a dental assistant, so she knows the environment and routine of a dental office well.

Today, besides continuing to see patients at that clinic, she has also opened an office with a friend.

Working at these two clinics, Fernanda's patients began asking for extraoral aesthetic procedures. She says that “today patients see us and know that we can do [aesthetic procedures], that we are capable of doing them, and they feel confident having them done by a dentist.”

This recognition is the result of a lot of struggle, a lot of work and constant improvement by dentists, who are fully capable and legally recognized to perform various aesthetic procedures, but need proper training that provides legal backing after certification by the competent council, in addition, of course, to the confidence that quality training gives.

And that is why Fernanda is taking the Postgraduate Program in Orofacial and Surgical Harmonization. She shares her expectations: “I hope to be a professional my patients feel confident with, and I'm sure it will be a success.”

The rewards of working in orofacial harmonization

The field itself is already a success! Many professionals say they have transformed their careers while working with their patients' beauty.

Dr. Jamile Branco, who is also a dentist, tells how important aesthetic procedures were in changing her own confidence; she already works with orofacial harmonization and feels fulfilled being able to pass that confidence on to her patients.

Gabriel Monte highlights how profitable it is for dentists to work with aesthetic procedures, along with the satisfaction of working with what they love without going through such a tedious work routine, seeing an exorbitant number of people every day.

Dr. Janice Lilían de Ávila, who also works with orofacial harmonization and is specializing and updating her skills in HOF, highlights how the field was a major turning point for her career. She says: “It makes me a better person to see the changes it brings in the people we work with.”

Thinking about health in an integrative way

That is exactly the goal of Aesthetic Health: thinking of health as a whole, not in isolation, and of physical, mental and social well-being, it seeks to promote contributions to integrative health.

So much so that – as happens in Fernanda's offices – many patients who seek out health professionals to solve more functional issues also end up looking for procedures that address pain of another kind, pain and dysfunction that can harm that patient's life and ability to express themselves just as much as more functional problems.

Therefore, health professionals who have everything it takes to also help solve this concern of their patients only need dedication to a properly qualified specialization that gives them the depth needed to safely carry out these practices, which are so important and valued today.
