One of the nicest stories I get the chance to tell, I was able to follow during this hands-on module for the Orofacial and Surgical Harmonization class at Nepuga. The mother of dental surgeon Roberta Rotta, Carmem Silvia Gabriel, has attended all of her daughter's hands-on classes since 2022, when she began the HOF specialization.
Mother and daughter are from Ribeirão Preto. For every hands-on class they travel to São Paulo, stay together, arrive early at the unit, located in Tatuapé, and begin a day of Clinical Immersion.
And this time there were four intense, very busy days. Between one break and the next in her daughter's chair, as a patient, Carmem takes the chance to stroll around the Institution, chat with her daughter's classmates and the faculty, have a coffee, and wait in the reception area.
It was during one of these breaks, after having already undergone three major procedures on Saturday, that she set aside a little time to talk with me about what this experience has been like, one that only she has the opportunity to live in the current HOF specialization class: accompanying her daughter in all of her hands-on classes.
“I've been with her since her practical sessions began, I came to every one, from ozone therapy to intradermal; I'm always a patient of hers and her friends”, Carmem says proudly.
This past weekend, Carmem was a model patient for collagen biostimulators and lifting threads. They even performed on her a very popular technique called fox eyes, which gives the eyes a lifted look.
“I've really liked what I'm seeing during the practical sessions: the institution is very well organized, the faculty are committed to teaching and learning, the students are very dedicated, I've met everyone, it's been a very rewarding experience. I'm already a loyal client of hers and her friends”, she says with genuine joy.
Changes in Students' Behavior Throughout the HOF Specialization
Since Carmem has followed all of her daughter's and her classmates' practice with an outside perspective, as the end patient, I asked her whether she had noticed changes in the class from the first appointment to the last. Whether they were more confident, with more professional bearing, and her answer was very positive:
“They already carry themselves differently than when they started; they already show the same professionalism and confidence as someone who has been working in the market for some time”, she emphasizes.
Facial Harmonization Combined with Orthodontics
In addition to the Orofacial Harmonization specialization at Nepuga, Roberta is also pursuing another postgraduate program, in orthodontics.
She graduated in May 2022 and sought out the specialization in search of a better work routine, more profitable procedures, and a way into the growing market in Dentistry.
Her first experience was working at a clinic in Sertãozinho; she wants to specialize in order to offer more complete care, as well as gain autonomy over her work schedule. “I want to decide how much time I'll spend on each patient, how I'll go about it”, she explains.
Today her plan is to treat patients who come in for orthodontics and offer facial harmonization as a finishing touch to the orthodontic treatment. That is how she decided to make the most of her time and pursue both specializations together.
Roberta has dedicated herself a great deal to injectables and is also eager for the surgical module, which will be the next hands-on sessions, scheduled for June.
