HOF stands out at CIOSP 2023, and of course Nepuga could not miss it. Both Dr. Ana Carolina Puga and Dr. Diogo Branco – coordinator of the HOF Postgraduate Program – attended the event.
In its 40th edition, CIOSP (São Paulo International Dentistry Congress) took place January 25 to 28 and was an excellent opportunity to follow trends and network.
All 4 days of the event featured a scientific program, lectures, and exhibitors in Orofacial Harmonization (HOF). There were 20 lectures in total dedicated to the topic, all sold out. Clearly a highlight of CIOSP 2023! Which only shows the success of the field.
Dr. Ana met several alumni at the congress. Some were visitors, others exhibitors, but all were willing and present to take part in the enriching exchanges made possible by an opportunity to meet so many colleagues in the health field and stay up to date.
Besides Nepuga students and alumni, Dr. Ana also met with established business partners, as well as new partnerships.
Dr. Ana was accompanied by Kirlliam Puga Tomazelli, director of Estética Bio, a company that has been a Nepuga partner for 7 years. Together, they got a close look at the latest from other business partners in dynamic product-news workshops.

A highlight of CIOSP 2023, but beyond the congress
Dr. Diogo Branco stresses that we cannot think we already know everything, and considers it important to have the humility to keep learning. In this way, he says his duty as coordinator of the HOF postgraduate program is to stay up to date in order to pass on the best to the specialists he helps train.
Dr. Diogo has been attending the congress for 10 years and notices that the HOF field keeps growing in size and importance at the congress. He was also present at this edition, and says:
“I've been coming to this congress for 10 years, and I see that every year orofacial harmonization grows more, has more space, more booths, more lectures, more dentists doing harmonization. And it's extremely important that these dentists, besides refining their knowledge here, also invest in good courses and specializations.”
Dr. Ana agrees with this and points out that what makes a complete professional is a combination of academic experience, networking, and clinical experience. She emphasizes:
“It's not only at trade shows that we gain knowledge, and it's not only in the postgraduate program either, but a union and an experience – like the ones we offer, hands-on clinical immersions, to bring one together with the other and come out a good professional.”
And this is often mentioned by postgraduate students: the exchange made possible during the clinical immersions is extremely important in the training process.

Training Is Also Networking
The clinical immersions allow professionals going through similar situations to exchange experiences, even though they face a multitude of circumstances and the particularities of each patient's case, which adds a great deal to the training process.
That is why it is important to highlight the networking factor in classrooms or teaching clinics too, not only at trade shows or congresses.
And this is a relevant point, because one might think of the academic environment as a space for top-down learning, but that is not what happens in the specialization, where professionals with diverse experiences and views meet and make these very important exchanges, both between faculty and postgraduate students and among the specialists in training.
